In 1972 Ed Catmull (the founder of Pixar) and Fred Parke created
the first ever digital 3D rendered film. This was a monumental breakthrough for
film makers and animators everywhere. It was a 3D render of Ed’s left hand, and
was later used in a feature film called Futureworld (1976). The video also
shows the ‘behind the scenes’, which is incredible. From mapping to texturing
and shading, it makes one think of what we digital animators take for granted.
